ASUS VG248QG Gaming Monitor: Review

ASUS VG248QG High Refresh Rate Monitor

ASUS VG248QG High Refresh Rate Monitor
4 5 0 1
The ASUS VG248Q is an excellent gaming monitor for competitive gamers. It supports high refresh rate gaming with the lowest response time on a monitor in the segment. In addition, you get support for both FreeSync and G-Sync, plus it uses strobing backlight technology to reduce motion blur and gives a clear view of the visuals.

It’s a complete package for gamers who have around $200 to spend. The design is ergonomic, and it gets a fully adjustable stand. Connectivity is ample. The only downside is the viewing angles because of its TN panel, but TNs are known for their low response times, so that gaming performance will be excellent.

Design & Aesthetics

Unlike most budget gaming monitors, the ASUS VG248QG looks like a proper gaming monitor with its game-centric design.

You will notice many sharp elements on the monitor that set it apart from the rest. The bezels are super thin. To be precise, they are 1 cm which is excellent for a budget monitor, giving a clear and distraction-free view of the screen.

It also eliminates black bars if you are going to build a multiple monitor setup.

The stand is extremely sturdy, and it looks very sharp. It has red elements on the part from where it swivels left and right. The monitor offers seamless adjustments, and it doesn’t need much effort.

The controls for OSD are given on the back. You get a joystick and four buttons which are easily accessible from the front.

The addition of a joystick makes it seamless to browse through OSD, and the control buttons are for toggling the GamePlus & GameVisual settings.

Performance & Picture Quality

Basic Monitor vs ASUS VG248QG with 0.5ms Response Time

The ASUS VG248QG packs a high performance 24″ TN panel beneath that aggressive-looking frame. It is a 1080p panel with 1920 x 1080 pixels which is excellent for low powered to medium powered CPUs. How? The lower the resolution, the easier it will be for the CPU to deliver FPS.

The colors and contrasts are excellent. However, they do need some calibration to get the best results. The brightness levels are outstanding, and it goes max 400-nits giving the best view of visuals even in a well-lit room. However, it does suffer from bad viewing angles, and that is very common in TN monitors. You do not get viewing angles and colors that you usually get on IPS and VA counterparts. However, the TN panels perform exceptionally well for gaming purposes due to their low response times.

Apart from that, the ASUS VG248QG uses strobing backlight technology for reducing motion blur. Our current contender has 0.5ms of the lowest response time which is superb at this price point. The fast-paced motions appear super clear and make you fly through intensive games.

The 165Hz refresh rate gives you a competitive advantage over your competitors. The visuals appear super buttery, and if you have been using a 60Hz monitor, then the 165Hz refresh rate will feel like a luxury to you.

Features

As far as features are concerned, the ASUS VG248QG is a feature-rich monitor. It has plenty of features for gaming as well as for wtasks that don’t include gaming.

The first feature it gets is the blue light filter which is fundamental and standard across most monitors these days. It reduces blue light emission by increasing the temperature of the screen, causing less eye strain.

Moreover, for gaming purposes, the VG248QG gets GamePlus and GameVisual set of features. In GamePlus, you get access to features such as FPS counter, custom crosshair and many more. The GameVisual features house preset modes for reading, gaming, and movie. These features are available in the OSD, and they are easily accessible via the joysticks and controls at the back.

Apart from that, our current contender houses ELMB, which ASUS calls Extreme Low Motion Blur. It uses strobing backlight technology, and it significantly helps reduce the motion blur so that your gameplay stays immersive and responsive.

The list has not ended yet. The ASUS VG248QG gets support for FreeSync and G-Sync for those with AMD and Nvidia cards. In addition, it helps sync the frame rates of your computer with the monitor’s frame rates for a stutter-free gaming experience.

Ergonomics & Connectivity Ports

As mentioned before, the stand on ASUS VG248QG is fully adjustable. It offers seamless multiple adjustments that require minimum effort. The stand can extend the monitor’s height up to 130 mm, which is nice. It also swivels so that you can keep the screens focused at the centre on a dual monitor setup. The ASUS VG248QG is an ideal monitor for programmers who game. Why? Because it offers a pivot function, the monitor rotates vertically, which gives more vertical space.

Moreover, the ASUS VG248QG is a VESA mount compatible with 100mm x 100mm VESA holes on the back, so mounting this monitor on a custom monitor arm will be possible.

The connectivity ports are easily accessible, and they are given on the left. You get a DisplayPort, an HDMI, and a DVI-D port for seamless video connections.

The Dell S2421HGF and AOC G2490VX are the two great alternatives to our current contender ASUS VH248QG. Out of all three, the ASUS VH248QG handles fast-paced motions very well, and you get access to ASUS’s gaming features.

The ASUS VH248QG does cost extra, but you get a complete package. The stand is fully adjustable, and you also get built-in speakers. The Dell S2421HGF and AOC G2490VX do not get a fully adjustable stand and also miss out on speakers.

The AOC G2490VX excels in picture quality with its VA panel. The viewing angles will be great, and colors will be rich on the AOC G2490VX. So, if you care about colors and picture quality more than gaming performance, get the AOC G2490VX.

The Dell S2421HGF is an equivalent contender to the ASUS VH248QG, but it lacks ergonomics, so if you don’t need an adjustable stand, the Dell S241HGF will save you few bucks.
